After an extraordinary trip to Mongolia I had to do another trip with Pete Oxford Expeditions. My recent trip to the Pantanal and Iguazu was just as good in a different way. The common denominators with the trips are expeditions into out of the way places, wonderful sightings of living creatures big and small with detailed information about them, Pete’s infectious enthusiasm and above all loads of fun. Pete has a passion for wildlife and is always keen to pass this on. He has travelled the world, has a vast knowledge and experience of the people and animals in these areas and is happy to share them with you. Pete does not do the classic photography workshop but will take you to places and situations where you can have the opportunity to get great original pictures or simply sit back and enjoy the situation.
I am looking forward to the next exciting trip with Pete - I just don’t know which one to pick first.

What an extraordinary country - vast and diverse landscapes, sinuous tropical rivers, abundant wildlife, endless opportunities for exploration. I cannot imagine a wilder, more fascinating place. And what an extraordinary leader to help this first-time visitor see, appreciate, and understand as much as - and more than - is possible in a too-brief trip. Pete has an uncanny eye for everything in the natural world - mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, insects, trees, vines - and infectious enthusiasm for sharing the wonders with others. He has an equal interest in, and close relationship with, the people of Guyana and makes the cultural landscape as meaningful as the natural one. His attention to details - logistics, special interests and needs of clients - is thorough, tireless, and always upbeat. I've taken many great trips to tropical wild places but this one was especially rich and captivating. My husband and I hope to return to Guyana - and would only do that with Pete as our leader.

I spent six magical days with Pete and 9 other people exploring Guyana. The trip was superb--Pete is a phenomenal naturalist and has an incredible eye for birds, mammals, fishes, snakes, and frogs! His enthusiasm is infectious, and his attention to detail for the logistics is excellent. Our trip was well-coordinated and Pete is very keen to have his guests have an extraordinary experience. And we did! Amazonian tree boas, birds endemic to Guyana, massive numbers of spectacular waterfowl, Giant Anteaters, Bird-eating Spiders, Vampire Fish, and Giant River Otters were among the highlights! We were able to spend time with local Guyanese people as well--including Macushi Amerinidans--and get a sense of their livelihoods, and their connections to these spectacular forests and waterways. I cannot think of another place in the world that has a more remote, wild feel than Guyana--the country is more than 80% forested and remains a largely roadless wilderness. A spectacular trip. (And Kaiteur Falls is a must! One of the most gorgeous places I've ever seen--waters plunging off of a sandstone tableland into the valley below. Truly magical). Very much look forward to traveling with Pete again!

I just returned from Pete’s expedition to Guyana. We had a group of nine including two naturalists who do conservation work. I came to Guyana with limited knowledge of this country. Seven days later I know a whole lot more and I feel emotionally vested in this country. Pete has a feel for animals, birds and their forest habitats at a level that I’ve never seen. We saw Guyana from all angles - bush planes in the air, long treks thru dense forests and many hours traveling up and down the rivers on small boats. If you like seeing unusual wildlife in its natural habitat this is the place for you. There were many magical experiences - finding a Black Caiman nursery with a dozen juveniles and floating peacefully with them, finding tree boas on the river banks with a flashlight in the pitch dark, trekking up to a Goliath bird eating spider’s nest, meeting a family that had adopted two baby river otters, a chance sighting of a Jabiru Stork as it swallowed an anaconda. Guyana will reveal its secrets if you choose to engage and Pete is a masterful guide. The arrangements were flawless even for a land where distance is measured in hours and life’s rhythms are tuned to the rise and fall of the many rivers that criss-cross the land. I am looking forward to traveling with him again.

Pete managed to give us a wonderful, panoramic, and detailed view of the wonders of Guyana in a very brief visit. The brevity was due to our own scheduling conflicts. Still, I came away with a much fuller understanding of the beauty, ecological dynamics, and even history of the region than I would have thought possible in a single visit. Every detail of the trip was executed flawlessly and masterfully: a first-rate, world-class experience.
